Ports of Indiana, Burns Harbor: West Access Road Improvements
Braced Earth Retention System with Steel Sheet Piling
Portage, Indiana
As a subcontractor to Walsh & Kelly, Thatcher Foundations Inc. installed 300 wall feet of cantilevered steel sheet piling for property line support of the new
"wider" West Access Road. The extremely dense dune sand required Thatcher to utilize specialized driving equipment to install the LEED quality steel sheeting.
The project was located on land owned by the Ports of Indiana, but leased to Beta Steel, so careful coordination by all parties was required to maintain an efficient schedule.
Thatcher employees from Indiana Local 150 Operators and Indiana Local 142 Teamsters observed the safety standards required by all entities, in addition to the company's own safety standards. 464 manhours were completed on this job, with no safety incidents.
